Linux is a free operating system on which android and apple are based on. It is open source and widely used for servers.
It is becoming better and better than windows, or more precisely windows are shooting themselves in the foot by putting AI everywhere and not being easily modifiable with AI. Beyond this, open source is the base of the world.
It’s also the best base for working with AI so long as it’s properly instructed. AI and open source
Which version of linux to choose? There are some like mac and some like windows and some other.
Just take ubuntu if you don’t know, then take another one when you install linux on another computer.

I’ve always been resistant to using linux as a primary OS until now, mostly because of how tricky it can be to get all apps working the way I wanted.
Yes it’s customizable, but that’s the point, you can easily get confused, run into issues, and even if you have the theory down, solving itcan take a while. Skill issue? Maybe.
Yet I still like the privacy, control and available ram, as everyone. So my compromise was a dual boot, for resilience: if linux doesn’t work, go to windows, fix it later, be able to work now.
It goes both ways, the other day my windows’ wifi just wouldn’t turn on (it came back on magically the next day) so I went to my linux.
For devs especially, this linux limitation has changed.
The fact that AI can run in the terminal and do more than code brings the pain level way down, for those who aren’t fans of manuals.
My camera wasn’t supported on kubuntu24.04, and I tried resolving it months ago. I tried again recently, with AI this time… and it worked - in only a few hours I had a fix in place. A very niche configuration issue, solved.
Naturally be careful with running an AI in your terminal. I’m not saying anyone can use linux now. That was always the case, with enough application and research. I’m saying it’s easier than ever if you use claude code as a companion for it. Just make sure you get the basics down, as always with AI, be the pilot, not the copilot.
I’m writing this down for those of you who were like me, tried it then decided to go simple. Get a dual boot, vanilla cream ubuntu, see for yourself! I wouldn’t recommend it with a local model just yet, but all we need is one fine tuned for it.
