You don’t need to know where something goes before you write it. That’s what the root of the folder is for, to me it screams that things aren’t in their place.
But as you start using the vault more and more you’ll be able to see what fits where, you can also use the AI actively to help you sort things out and suggest new folders etc look how orderly it is.

The basic loop

  1. Write the thought down. Root of the vault, or the right place if you know it. Don’t worry about connecting it to everything else at this stage. Use a plugin like recent notes so you can get back to them.
  2. It will have the default frontmatter, you can also add a tag (see private): #idea if it’s for someone to build later, #question if it needs an answer, #incomplete if you’ll return to it. No tag is fine too. If it fits a template you use, you can also add it, that’s the next level. Is it a book, a person, a clipping?
  3. Let it sit there, come back to it, and then when you clean up your digital guarden a folder gets worked as a session (the protocol in private) — when that happens, everything loose that belongs to it gets pulled in, split, linked, and logged. Use AI to help you be more accountable.

Example

Two separate thoughts hit you back to back: one on AI alignment, one about a cybersecurity conference you want to attend. Each is its own evergreen note — you don’t merge them because they arrived close together. You know to put the alignment one in the right place, and the cybersecurity one to Work probably, but if you’re not sure it just goes in the root for cleanup later. Root files are like a list of todos.

If you want it sorted now

Drop it in Todo for AI instead of leaving it where you wrote it, with a tag naming where it should land if you already know. Undirected entries fall to whichever session next has room. Or just use private as a thinking place to put thoughts that need sorting later.

When the sorting actually happens

Eventually somebody decides where the note lands — you, tidying up, or an agent working that folder as a session. Where a note goes is how that decision gets made: which room takes it, why the categories: matter more than the folder, and the seven rooms in the order they climb (Chakras for why that order exists at all). I’d recommend doing some sorting out regularly, say every Powerful power-less sundays afternoon or on the saterday.
