What this is: 50 plates spanning human knowledge — physics to philosophy, cells to civilizations. Each plate is a map, not a textbook: the load-bearing facts, numbers, names, and open tensions of one field, compressed to a single screen.

The point: orientation. Knowing the shape of what is known — and where fields connect — is the foundation everything else hangs on. The cross-links are the real content: physics underwrites chemistry, chemistry underwrites life, and epistemology asks how any of it is known at all.

Reading a plate: skim the bold terms, weigh the numbers, end on the italic tension line — it marks where the field is genuinely unsettled. Follow whichever link pulls.

Index: hover the top bar to unfold the full grid. Plate numbers are tinted by domain — six color families group related territories.

Chemistry

Atom: nucleus (protons+neutrons) + electron shells. Chemistry = outer-electron behavior only. Underlying rules from quantum mechanics.

Periodic table (Mendeleev 1869): 118 elements; columns share valence, hence behavior. ~90 natural.

Bonds: covalent (shared e⁻) · ionic (transferred) · metallic (delocalized) · hydrogen bonds (weak, but make water and DNA work).

Water: polar, universal solvent, anomalous (ice floats). Precondition for life.

Carbon: 4 bonds, chains, rings → organic chemistry → 10⁶⁰+ possible small molecules. Basis of biochemistry and genetic machinery.

Reactions: thermodynamics says whether (ΔG < 0), kinetics says how fast. Catalysts cut activation energy — enzymes are biology's catalysts.

pH, redox, equilibrium (Le Chatelier) — three lenses covering most reaction reasoning.

Rock cycle: igneous ⇄ sedimentary ⇄ metamorphic. Strata = archive; fossils within anchor evolution's timeline.

Deep time: eons → eras → periods. Cambrian explosion ~539 Myr (most animal body plans debut); dinosaurs end 66 Myr (Chicxulub impact).

Three domains: Bacteria · Archaea · Eukarya. Animals + plants + fungi = thin slice of one branch.

Proteins: 20 amino acids, folded shape = function. Enzymes, receptors, motors, structure — life's hardware.

ATP = universal energy currency; photosynthesis charges it from light, respiration from food. See Energy, Metabolism.

Homeostasis: feedback loops hold temperature, pH, glucose in range — biology's control theory.

Scale: human ≈ 3×10¹³ cells + roughly as many resident microbes. You are an ecosystem.

Evolution

Darwin/Wallace 1859: variation + heredity + selection → adaptation. No foresight, no goal — a blind algorithm running ~3.8 Gyr.

Modern synthesis = Darwin + Mendel: selection acts on phenotypes, bookkeeping in genes. Mechanics in Genetics.

Forces: natural selection · sexual selection (peacock problem) · genetic drift (chance, dominant in small populations) · gene flow.

Fitness = reproductive success, nothing more. Kin selection (Hamilton: rB > C) explains altruism toward relatives — echoes in kinship.

Niche: no two species hold same one long (competitive exclusion). Coexistence via partitioning.

Hard problem (Chalmers): why is there something it is like to be you? Mechanism explains function, not felt quality (qualia).

Theories: Global Workspace (broadcast = consciousness) · Integrated Information (Φ) · predictive processing · higher-order thought. None confirmed.

Self: construction, not thing — narrative center of gravity. Split-brain, meditation, psychedelics all dissociate it.

Free will: Libet's readiness potential precedes felt decision; compatibilists (most philosophers) say freedom ≠ uncaused. Stakes for law, morality.

Other minds problem: consciousness only ever observed from inside. Animal, infant, machine consciousness — inference, never proof.

Vision claims ~30% of cortex; color exists in heads, not wavelengths. Attention is the bottleneck — inattentional blindness (gorilla study).

Emotion theories: basic universal six (Ekman: anger, fear, joy, sadness, disgust, surprise) vs constructed (Barrett: brain builds emotion from affect + concepts + culture).

Core affect: valence (good/bad) × arousal (calm/activated) — the two-axis substrate.

Productivity: finite rules, infinite sentences — discrete infinity. No animal system matches it.

Chomsky: innate universal grammar vs usage-based learning — core unresolved fight. LLMs reopened it: grammar learnable from data alone?
